No stranger to campaigns, Gerrie Schipske entered electoral politics at the age of 10 when her parents took her to LAX to greet Senator John Kennedy and then to the Bonaventure Hotel to meet other prominent Democrats.

A volunteer stint at the Venice Family Clinic convinced Schipske to return to health care and she received her degree and certification as a Registered Nurse Practitioner. Working at St. Mary Medical Center, Schipske was encouraged by the hospital administrator to join him at law school – and she did. Today, Schipske is both a licensed Registered Nurse Practitioner and attorney and serves as the State Senate Rules Committee appointee to the Medical Board of California.

Schipske ran unsuccessfully for college board and city council before defeating a long-time incumbent and winning a seat on the Long Beach Community College District Board of Trustees, spending less than $10,000.

Gerrie Schipske defeated several candidates and was elected to the Long Beach City Council in 2006 and re-elected in 2010, receiving 64% of the vote. Schipske is the first open lesbian elected in Long Beach.
